Is Your Child Nervous About Holiday Club? Read This Before Their First Day

"What if they don't make any friends?"

"What if they don't want me to leave?"

"What if they hate it?"

If your child is about to attend a holiday club for the first time, there's a good chance you've asked yourself one, or all, of these questions.

The truth is, almost every parent feels a little nervous before their child's first day.

After running holiday clubs for years, we've welcomed thousands of children through our doors. Some arrive bouncing with excitement, others hold Mum or Dad's hand a little tighter than usual.

One thing we've learned is this...

Children are often much braver than we give them credit for.

In fact, it's usually the parents who spend the day worrying, while their child is busy making friends, building dens, playing games and asking if they can come back tomorrow.

If your child is feeling a little unsure about their first day, here are a few things we'd like you to know.

First of All, Feeling Nervous Is Completely Normal

Starting somewhere new can feel like a big step.

  • New people.
  • New surroundings.
  • A different routine.

Even the most confident children can feel a little uncertain at first.

Being nervous doesn't mean your child won't enjoy themselves. It simply means they're stepping outside their comfort zone, and that's something every child experiences from time to time.

Your Child Takes Their Lead From You

Children are incredibly good at picking up on how we feel.

If we look worried or uncertain, they often mirror those emotions.

Instead of saying:

"Don't worry, you'll be fine."

Try saying:

"I can't wait to hear all about the fun you have today."

It sounds like a small difference, but focusing on excitement rather than worry helps children approach the day with confidence.

Keep Goodbyes Short, Warm and Positive

This is probably the biggest piece of advice we can give.

When your child arrives, give them a hug, tell them you'll see them later and leave confidently.

It's completely understandable to want to stay a little longer if they're feeling unsure.

Ironically, that often makes things harder.

In our experience, children usually settle much more quickly once they're free to join an activity, meet other children and start having fun.

They Don't Need to Know Everyone

One of the questions we hear most often is:

"But my child doesn't know anyone."

The reality is that many children arrive not knowing anyone else.

That's one of the wonderful things about holiday clubs.

Whether they're building Lego together, making slime, playing football or working as a team to complete a challenge, friendships tend to happen naturally.

Some of the children who meet during the school holidays end up becoming friends long after the holidays have finished.

Tell Us Anything That Will Help

Nobody knows your child better than you.

If they're shy, love dinosaurs, enjoy drawing, have a favourite game or there's something that helps them settle, tell us.

Those little details really matter.

At Camp Glide, we take time to get to know every child, especially those visiting us for the first time.

The more we know, the better we can help them feel comfortable from the moment they arrive. Update your account here.

Don't Worry if They Want to Watch Before Joining In

Not every child runs through the door full of confidence.

Some children like to spend a few minutes watching what's happening before they join in.

That's absolutely fine.

There's no "right" way to settle.

Some children are playing football within minutes.

Others prefer to start with colouring, crafts or a quieter activity.

Our role is to help every child find their own way, at their own pace.

Holiday Clubs Build Confidence Without Children Even Realising It

One of the most rewarding parts of our job is watching confidence grow.

We've seen children arrive quietly holding a parent's hand, then leave later that day proudly telling us about the new friend they've made.

Holiday clubs give children opportunities to:

  • Try new activities.
  • Meet different children.
  • Solve problems together.
  • Build independence.
  • Discover new interests.

Often, they don't even realise they're growing in confidence, they're simply having fun.

One Thing Parents Always Say...

There's a phrase we hear time and time again.

"I was worried for nothing."

Parents tell us they spent the morning wondering how their child was getting on.

Then they arrive at collection to find a child who's smiling, talking non-stop about their day and asking...

"Can I come back tomorrow?"

Those are the moments we love.

A Few Things You Can Do Before the First Day

A little preparation can make a big difference.

✔ Talk positively about holiday club.

✔ Let your child help pack their bag.

✔ Make sure everything is named.

✔ Arrive with plenty of time, so nobody feels rushed.

✔ Smile, give them a hug and let our team do the rest.

Why We Love First Days at Camp Glide

First days are special.

They're the beginning of new friendships, new adventures and new memories.

Our team understands that every child is different.

Some arrive excited.

Some arrive quietly.

Some arrive full of questions.

Wherever your child starts, our aim is always the same, to make sure they leave feeling happier, more confident and excited to come back.

That's why so many of our families return to Camp Glide holiday after holiday, year after year.

A Final Thought

If your child is feeling a little nervous about their first holiday club, take comfort in knowing they're not alone.

Almost every child feels a little uncertain about trying something new.

The encouraging part is that those nerves often disappear far quicker than parents expect.

Before long, they'll be busy making memories, building friendships and enjoying experiences they'll still be talking about when school starts again.

And if history has taught us anything, there's a good chance the biggest challenge at the end of the day won't be settling them in...

It'll be persuading them it's time to come home.
